Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2013.
This thesis examines the state of art collecting and investment in China. It illustrates the four key types of legitimate art collectors and discusses their respective characteristics, concerns, and the myriad opportunities and challenges they face. It also investigates the current state of rampant speculation and questionable practices in China's auction market as well as the nascent art investment industries that provide the larger context for art collecting in China. These practices have helped marginalize legitimate art collecting and have pushed art prices to unsustainable heights from which a painful crash or major correction could result, if the art market bubble bursts. In a somewhat more granular treatment, this thesis has discussed public collections and corporate collections in addition to individual collections and analyzed the larger art world ecosystem in which the collectors are situated, highlighted areas of development and constraints, and offered counter-strategies.
