Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2013.
This thesis examines the potential benefit of sourcing obsidian artifacts with LA-TOF-ICP-MS to enhance the understanding of hunter-gatherer societies during the Early and Middle Holocene in southern California. To demonstrate the utility of the method, 761 obsidian artifacts were analyzed with LA-TOF-ICP-MS and XRF from CA-ORA-64, a large coastal shell midden occupied for 5,000 years during the Early Holocene and Middle Holocene. Additionally, 141 flow-specific obsidian hydration dates were used to investigate obsidian use through time. This approach determined 33 artifacts were large enough to analyze with XRF and all 761 artifacts could be analyzed with LA-TOF-ICP-MS. The results indicate each method can identify a similar pattern in the relative importance of different obsidian sources and subsources, as well as the distance-to-source relationships. However, the LA-TOF-ICP-MS instrument identified the provenance of a larger number of smaller-sized obsidian artifacts, which increased the time depth, refined the temporal patterns and distance-decay model, and identified additional sources and subsources represented by the smaller artifacts. As a result, the behavioral patterns identified in the temporal and proportional data were only evident using the LA-TOF-ICP-MS data.

The results indicate the inhabitants of CA-ORA-64 mainly had access to obsidian from the West Sugarloaf obsidian subsource in the Coso Volcanic Field. Use of the West Sugarloaf subsource was established early in the occupation of CA-ORA-64 and maintained over the 5,000 years of occupation. Two peaks in obsidian hydration dates and shifts in subsource use suggest increased accessibility and use of the Coso Volcanic Field through time, possibly associated with the movements of people from the western Great Basin during the initial occupation of the site and during environmental instability in the Middle Holocene. The focus of obsidian use at CA-ORA-64 was on Coso obsidian, but the presence of obsidian from the Casa Diablo, Bodie Hills, and Buck Mountain sources suggests a connection with the western Great Basin along effective travel corridors near ancient pluvial lakes.
