This study examined the relationship between perceived parental acceptance and psychological adjustment in transgender children. There is great debate over how to provide treatment to children who are gender variant with the two most controversial approaches being supportive treatment or reparative treatment. Given the many features associated with children who are gender variant, it is unclear if problem behaviors and psychological struggles are a manifestation of their internal struggle with gender identity or a result of not being supported in their gender choice. This study investigated the impact of one central part of the child's environment parental reflection, on his/her sense of well-being.

This study helps us better understand whether the experience of gender variance is in itself a distressing experience or if children's stress symptoms arise from external ridicule and non-acceptance by peers, teachers, parents, etc. Participant families were recruited through support groups, on-line listservs for parents of transgender children, and a conference for families with a transgender child. Parents completed the Parental Acceptance Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ) to measure their perceived acceptance as well as the Child-Behavior Check List (CBCL), to measure psychological adjustment of their children. Children completed the Personality Assessment Questionnaire (PAQ) to measure psychological adjustment, as well as the child PARQ to assess their perception of parental acceptance. It was hypothesized that as experiences of parental rejection increased, so too would behavior problems and psychological distress.

Despite the number of studies looking at the relationship between parental acceptance and well-being, this is the first study to look at this relationship relative to a population with a specific psychiatric diagnosis and with a focus on gender issues. Overall the group of parents who participated were more accepting than rejecting. Yet, parents who reported more rejecting behaviors also reported an increase in behavior problems and psychological distress in their children. Given the small sample of children who participated there were no substantial findings regarding child reports. Overall, the study provided an important perspective regarding the ways in which parental acceptance directly influences the psychological health and behaviors of transgender children.
