This study tested two theoretically distinct conceptualizations of "internal working models of self and others" (IWMs) posited by attachment theory (Bowlby 1982, 1988). The developmental conceptualization holds that IWMs developed early in life operate automatically and unconsciously across the lifespan (i.e. are not available for conscious reflection). The social cognitive conceptualization of IWMs conjectures that it is the strength of representation, through reinforcement, that influences how automatically an IWM will operate. This study first tested the effects of two different subliminal attachment threat primes on response times (RTs) of thoughts and beliefs within three attachment domains: self, romantic partner, and parents while controlling for depressed mood. Next the independent and interactive contributions of adult attachment orientations (Anxiety and Avoidance) to these RTs were examined. One hundred twenty-three undergraduate students were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: maternal threat prime, partner threat prime, and a neutral priming condition. Participants completed measures of attachment orientation (Experiences in Close Relationships Scale [ECR]) and depressed mood (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale [CES-D]). Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to determine the amount of variance in RTs accounted for by CES-D scores, ECR Anxiety and Avoidance scores, attachment threat type (prime), and the interaction of ECR scores and threat type. The maternal threat did not appear to increase RTs within either of the attachment domains when compared to baseline. RTs were only significantly greater than baseline within the romantic domain. This was interpreted as evidence that maternal IWMs become less automatic while romantic models become more so in adulthood. A post hoc regression analysis revealed a three-way interaction of romantic threat by attachment domain by Avoidance. This indicates that the ECR is sensitive to the implicit operation of romantic IWMs. Overall, this study is supportive of a social cognitive conceptualization of IWMs.
