Thesis (Ph.D.)--Wayne State University, 2007.
This study examined the relations between economic pressure, maternal depression, parenting practices and child outcomes in 147 predominantly African-American, Detroit-area families. Specifically, parenting practices were indexed by the use of verbal redirection, corporal punishment and parental consistency. Child outcomes were defined as degree of internalizing, externalizing, total behavioral symptoms and perceived social support. A mediational model was predicted wherein maternal depression would mediate the relation between economic pressure and parenting as well as the relation between economic pressure and child outcomes. It was also predicted that parenting would mediate the relation between maternal depression and child outcomes as well as the relation between economic pressure and child outcomes.

In addition to mediational analyses, ancillary moderation analyses were performed predicting that negative parenting (in the form of more spanking and higher inconsistency) will be related to more negative outcomes for children of depressed versus non-depressed parents, spanking will be related to more impairment in children whose parents are inconsistent versus more consistent, and parenting practices will have similar outcomes for both Black and non-Black children. Findings demonstrated mixed support for the study's predictions. Maternal depression partially mediated the relation between economic pressure and parenting, and fully mediated the relation between economic pressure and child outcomes. However, parenting practices did not mediate the relation between economic pressure and child outcomes or the relation between maternal depression and child outcomes. As predicted spanking moderated inconsistency with regard to child outcomes---specifically internalizing, and race did not moderate the effects of parenting. However, parenting practices did not moderate depressions effects on child outcomes. Despite mixed support for the predicted hypotheses, the current findings may have implications for future study of economic pressure and maternal depression as they relate to parenting in low-income populations.
