In the first essay answers the hypothetical question: what would child outcomes be, had the woman made a different decision about abortion during the pregnancy? I measure, and test the significance of the differences between child outcomes from assuming two conditions hold: (a) the women not having abortions bring their pregnancies to term and (b) the women who had abortions have children later. The findings show that for women who postponed childbearing by having an abortion, child outcomes significantly improve in mathematical and reading recognition tests, but not in vocabulary tests. The explanation is related to the timing of pregnancy. After aborting the first pregnancy, women experience better conditions in the subsequent pregnancy. Even though there is no significant increase in women's family income or education after the abortion and before the next live birth, higher expectations for the child contribute to the improved outcomes.

Examining the choices married women can make on household works, the second chapter explores the impact purchased food consumption has on labor force participation of married women in Thailand. Changes in household production, such as substituting home cooked meals with purchased food, can explain the increase of women in the labor forces. In this study, purchased foods mean food from restaurants or prepared meals from market. Findings from the sample of married households in urban areas show that only the increase in restaurant meals bolsters female labor force participation, not the market-prepared food. Conversely when restricting the sample to low-income households, only the market-prepared food increases the participation of women in the workforce. Though higher consumption of purchased foods significantly affects the wife's participation in the labor force, it does not impact the husband's.
