Thesis (Ph.D.)--Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center, 2000.
This dissertation explored the conditions necessary for the design of Evolutionary Learning Community (ELC)—a flexible and evolving guiding image of an alternative learning system that serves to catalyze the emergence of sustainable and evolutionary futures. The four initial conditions that were identified were: (1) the development of an idealized operational definition (i.e., ideal image) of ELC; (2) the definition of the profile of potential ELC designers; (3) the conceptualization of a learning framework for empowering people to participate in the design of ELC; and (4) the creation of an image of a real-world ELC.

The research process was conceptualized as learning for action employing Evolutionary Systems Design. The process of inquiry involved two iterations: The first was a theoretical exploration of conditions based on an extensive literature review. The second consisted of a series of two hour learning conversations, via Internet, with ten individuals committed to bring about a sustainable and evolutionary future. The full expression of the conditions involved the creative integration of the insights from these two iterations.

The first condition for the design of ELC was the articulation of an idealized operational definition or ideal image of ELC. The core aspect of this definition was formulated as a system of “fuzzy guiding principles” which could aid communities in their design journey toward their ideal with regard to lifelong evolutionary learning, an evolutionary ethic, partnership, environmental sustainability, social responsibility, future orientation, quality of life, flow, syntony, and wholeness and interconnections. The second condition consisted of a description of the profile of the potential ELC designers—a guide for creating common ground while celebrating diversity. According to this profile, the designers of ELC are lifelong learners, systems thinkers, environmentalists, planetary citizens, authentic, empathetic; creative, pragmatic, optimistic, and passionate. The third condition presented a scaffolding designed to facilitate community building, learning, design, and action in the journey from evolutionary consciousness to conscious evolution. Lastly, the fourth of the conditions for the design of ELC consisted in a fictional narrative of a concrete ELC that illustrated the application of the previous three conditions. The dissertation concluded with recommendations for further research.
