During language comprehension, readers have to hold current text in memory so that subsequent text can he integrated with it. One important aspect of text comprehension is the processing of "anaphors" or linguistic devices that are used to repeatedly refer to previously mentioned entities in consecutive clauses and sentences. Anaphor resolution involves the processing of expressions such as repeated definite noun phrases (NP), 'the student', or pronouns, 'she' so as to determine to whom or to what the expression refers to This dissertation examined the time course and brain basis of repeated definite NP references in the light of a specific theoretical framework, the Informational Load Hypothesis (ILH) proposed by Almor (1999).

Results of Experiment 1, using eye-tracking methodology, showed that semantic overlap, between the reference and the referent, inhibits the integration of the reference with the referent and prior context. This inhibitory effect was manifest in a region that included the word following the anaphor. In the ERP study in Experiment 2, this effect was manifest in the form of a larger N400-700 negativity over the posterior areas in response to repeated NP references relative to pronouns. These results support the ILH claims that semantic overlap disturbs the balance between the processing cost and function when it does not serve any discourse function. Finally, the third experiment, using fMRI methodology, showed that the lingual gyrus, is engaged in the processing of repeated NP reference relative to pronoun reference. Cortical source estimation for the posterior negativity in the ERP study revealed sources primarily in the lingual gyrus and in the inferior frontal gyrus.

Overall this dissertation provides converging evidence that the process of anaphor resolution is initiated quickly, within 250-300 milliseconds of the onset of the critical reference. The outcome of this process may however be completed only on the word following the anaphor. Additionally, the fMRI experiment suggests a role of spatial attentional processes in the processing of repeated NP anaphors. Finally, exploratory source analysis work suggests that fMRI and ERP data can be effectively combined to study higher order processes such as text comprehension.
