This qualitative study used the Delphi method to determine the most effective leadership traits that lead the advancement and promotion of women in the United States Air Force. The study consisted of three round of data collection from a panel of 20 experts to answer the two research questions guiding the research: (a) Which leadership traits contribute to the promotion and advancement of senior female military leaders in the United States Air Force? (b) What are the most dominant and influential leadership traits among senior female military leaders in the United States Air Force? The panelists were selected from an email request and were required to have at least 15 years of active duty leadership experience. Key findings were garnered from three rounds of a Delphi research study. Through qualitative coding of the panelist’s feedback, the specific traits that emerged included motivation, drive, integrity, people-focused, and adaptability. The data from this study indicated that female leaders do value specific traits as contributors to their success despite the biases that exist toward women in their ability to serve in higher leadership roles (Padma, 2010). The study makes a significant contribution to leadership research because it gains a consensus among women who have demonstrated an ability to excel in a male dominated military environment. The study also provides an understanding the unique capabilities that women bring into higher levels of leadership and prompts recommendations for future research on the larger population of female senior leaders outside of the military.
