The replication of the U.S. cultural models in business and social organizations is a common practice in Latin America. In Ecuador, a university operates under the liberal arts model, understanding it as a replication of an U.S. cultural model, in an environment where the Ecuadorian cultural beliefs and values constitute the national cultural framework. This dissertation explores the convergence of the two cultures identified and its impact on the university social systems. Specifically, using Gharajedaghi's systems thinking framework, the study sought to explore how the current learning, control, decision-making and leadership systems of the university are influenced by the existence and the convergence of the two cultures. In this qualitative phenomenological study the needs and lived experiences of 32 individuals served as the basis to explore how the university systems work from a bicultural perspective. Analysis of results shows that the two cultures at both individual and collective level indeed influence the university systems. However, instead of converging, the two cultures interact in a circular dynamic, where one culture embraces the system under its own set of decision and success criteria, makes it useless and forbidden to use what was learned and achieved under the other one. Using Scharmer's U Theory it is shown that such circular dynamic keeps the system anchored in the initial stages of Scharmer's U, making the system unable to access its deeper source of learning and innovation. It is concluded in this study that neither of the two cultures alone could make the system purposeful. The study results lead the focus of the interactions on the power of the leadership of the university to break the circular dynamic and move the system towards higher levels of listening and dialogue, becoming purposeful in presensing to be successful in convergence.
