This quantitative study investigates 136 Togolese high school students’ attitudes towards learning English. It also seeks to find out whether, in students’ views, attitudes affect learning. Participants were divided into three groups according to their level of education. The instrument used comprised five questions with potential responses for rating, four open-ended questions, and three questions on demographics. A 5-point Likert Scale was used. The data analysis was based on descriptive and inferential statistics. A qualitative approach was borrowed to analyze open-ended questions’ data.

The results indicate that a majority of the participants hold positive attitudes towards learning English. The ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference between the three groups represented by educational level-1, level-2, and level-3. Additionally, students perceive positive attitudes as positively affecting learning while negative attitudes negatively impact learning. These results suggest a need for future research to address interactional practices in the English classroom.
