Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2009.
Bartholomé de Las Casas, the first Bishop of the New World during the Spanish conquest of the Americas positioned himself as the foremost authority on the conversion of the Indigenous in the name of his adopted religion, himself the son of a family of Jewish converts. This project seeks to explore the ethical, political and theological dimensions of Lascasian conversion in the context of the cleric’s own conversion and converso experience in inquisitorial Spain. The study investigates Spanish colonization as the practice of conversion and does so from a theoretical framework established by Nietzsche’s critique of Saint Paul’s political theology.

Las Casas’ was the loudest voice of XVI century Spain clamoring “on behalf” of the Indigenous, and history has remembered him as the counterpoint to Sepúlveda’s (and official) support of enslavement and destruction in the Indies. Las Casas’ position, shaped by his experiences as an Iberian Jew, reveals itself to be sometimes humanist, sometimes enlightened, often self-aggrandizing and always deeply imperial.

Las Casas’ work paved the way for a more humane and longer-lasting conquest of the Americas. His was a more perfect destruction of culture still visible in the continued western influence in Latin America, not the least of which comes from the theological inheritors of Las Casas’ imperial project of humanistic conversion, the Catholic liberation theologians.
