Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kentucky, 2007.
This dissertation focuses on distinguishing cultural identity in the archaeological record by contextualizing ethnographic, environmental, historical, and archaeological data into a regional model for hunter-gatherer cultural identity and applies this model to the late prehistoric archaeological and early Colonial periods in Texas. This work presents a late prehistoric and early contact period synthesis, defines multiple cultural identities in the prehistoric record, and links the regional distribution of the prehistoric Toyah material culture with the indigenous Tejas alliance during the early Colonial Period by emphasizing the generative forces from which cultural identities emerge.
