Radiologic technologist positions have lower retention rates and higher turnover compared to those in other industries. The purpose of this study was to examine and explore job satisfiers for technologists in an acute care hospital environment, an assessment that can both help improve healthcare quality and provide cost savings through talent retention. Guided by Herzberg's theory of motivation and Maslow's theory of need hierarchy, a qualitative study was conducted with data collected from semistructured taped and transcribed interviews with 10 radiologic technologists from 2 Midwestern suburban acute care hospitals. Interview data from the total of 20 interviews was organized and coded into meaning themes. Inductive qualitative coding techniques and interpretive thematic analysis methods were employed to summarize the interview question responses. There were 9 interview questions designed to explore key satisfiers that were most important to the technologists and that related to job satisfaction, forms of recognition, and decision making. The top 3 job satisfiers identified in this study were (a) working with patients, (b) working with coworkers, and (c) working for the sake of working. The goal of the study was to determine the key influential factors that could affect job satisfaction indicators for radiologic technologists and enhance the quality of patient diagnostic imaging in these settings. Hospital administrators could use these findings related to job satisfaction and other employment issues to enhance retention and reverse the departure of radiologic technologists. In doing so, the results developed from this research will contribute towards the advancement of social change at the individual, organizational, and societal levels.
