To meet today's challenges of globalization and rapid changes in the international market, organizations have been increasingly relying on teams for innovative thinking and productive knowledge. With this increasing global nature of work, teams are more likely cross-cultural, consisting of members from many different national cultural backgrounds. However, this contextual factor is not always taken into consideration while trying to derive the most from teams. By conducting in-depth interviews with 20 individuals, the researcher through this qualitative study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of how national culture influences perceptions of teamwork and learning.

The findings suggested that the context in which the teams operated was critical to whether teams could effectively work and learn. The different perceptions that team members held interfered with the process of presenting varied ideas and having a dialogue with team members; thus, it was difficult for the team to integrate many different points of view. Moreover, it made the teamwork and learning more difficult if members in the organization were expected to work across national cultural differences, but no attention was explicitly paid to what that means.

The study revealed that for cross-cultural teams to work and learn effectively, it was important to pay attention and evaluate different individuals who were on the team and their abilities to understand and manage cultural differences (Lincoln, 2011). The role of the team leader was important in trying to construct team conditions of greater inquiry and facilitate team meetings by using skills that serve to bridge the cross-cultural gap. Individual learning actions taken to work around constraints on teamwork through social interactions with team members, colleagues, and mentors represented what Kasl, Marsick, and Dechant (1997) described as pooled learning. Moreover, an organizational context which valued networked social interaction and provided resources for structured team communication was essential to enhance the work and learning of cross-cultural teams.
