Museum Studies programs in the United States have made significant strides in increasing levels of performance and service in the museum field through their diverse approaches to preparing museum professionals. As leading advocates for and communicators with the general public, museum training programs play a vital role in fulfilling the missions of museums, both big and small. Using a qualitative case study method, this study described and analyzed the Museum Studies Certificate Program at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, from its conception until its current status and framework.

The guiding research issue for this study is the critical description and analysis of the inception, development, and implementation of the Museum Studies Certificate Program at Florida State University. Specific research questions are: (1) What is the role of the museum Studies Certificate Program at Florida State University in the context of the university and of the museum profession? (2) What are the characteristics, merits, and limitations of the Museum Studies Certificate Program at Florida State University? (3) How was the Museum Studies Certificate Program at Florida State University planned, developed, and implemented? (4) What recommendations for preparation of museum professions can be drawn from the history and current configuration of the Museum Studies Certificate Program at Florida State University? The qualitative case study method involved open-ended interviews, document reviews, and observations in the field, which enabled contextual, in-depth, and holistic understanding of Museum Studies at Florida State University. The program was analyzed using the American Association of Museums' guidelines for museum studies programs. It was found to effectively meet nearly all the criteria established in those guidelines.

The results of the study included the finding that Florida State University's Museum Studies Certificate Program functions in a close and necessary relationship within the context of the University. The findings suggest the exemplary educational roles and practices that a university museum studies program should undertake, including offering diverse forms of education and practica which serve a broad range of students, and a commitment to excellence in all its practices. Also, the museum studies program and program directors' distinctive institutional roles and importance were confirmed by the findings. The recommendations are presented here are designed to strengthen the Museum Studies Certificate Program in its role as the only program of its kind in Florida.
