This dissertation examines the history of Cossack frontier settlers in the North Caucasus, their interactions with the native peoples there, and the creation of a unique society. The new historiography of the American frontier has informed this attempt to reevaluate the Russian conquest of the North Caucasus as a frontier process rather than as military conquest. The conclusions are based on extensive archival research and a comprehensive reading of published primary and secondary sources.

This dissertation suggests that the Russian incorporation of the region was a more ambivalent process than the one usually depicted--colonization occurred, but so did nativization; military power came up against economic dependency. It also shows that the boundaries between colonist and native could be rather loose.

Central to the dissertation is an exploration of the tension between the twin purpose of Cossacks conquest and Cossack colonization, between military service and the needs of their communities. Cossacks defended the Caucasus Military Line, and that was essential to the conquest of the region. As settlers, though, Cossacks and mountain people transversed that military line whose porousness was essential to the Cossack communities. On the one hand, Cossacks participated in a military-economic blockade to channel trade through official trading posts and make the mountain people economically dependent on Russia. As settlers, though, Cossacks needed free-flowing trade, and took every opportunity to subvert the quarantine measures. The demands of conquest forced the Cossacks to spend their lives in military service. The demands of their labor-starved economies forced them to shirk that service to attend to their farms Cossacks took part in a holy war of Christianity versus Islam, when the mountain leader Shamil rallied his people under the banner of jihad. Cossacks, though, often practiced Old Belief, which made their main religious opponent the Russian state. The author also examines the peculiarities of Cossack society on the frontier, including the strong position of women and the diverse arrangements--including indentured servitude--for securing scarce labor power.
