For most historians, the word Resistenza or Resistance refers specifically to the fight to liberate Italy from German occupation that took place from September 1943 to April 1945. My analysis of Ada Gobetti's "life of resistance" proposes a broader definition, one that includes not only armed resistance during wartime, but any action that fought against the obstruction of freedom, the limitation of human rights, or the restriction of knowledge imposed by a political power. Ada's resistance activities comprised actions not often considered under the rubric of resistance, such as translating a controversial historical work from English into Italian, which was censored by the Fascists in 1939, and writing an anti-Fascist children's book in 1940. While the Resistenza represented a culmination of more than twenty years of anti-Fascist activity for Ada, it also brought the beginning of an awareness of the specific talents, needs, and rights of Italian women, more than one hundred thousand of whom participated in the Resistenza. This realization led Ada to organize other Italian women into defense and assistance groups and to found an underground women's newspaper. In early 1945, she crossed the Alps on foot and made contact with women in the French Resistance in Grenoble. Ada's "coming of age" during the Resistenza provides us with a fresh view of the Resistenza as a liberator of women's strengths and possibilities. After the war ended, Ada's experience as a resister developed into a constructive political and social activism. As vice mayor of Turin, she fought openly for the rights of women and children in Italian society. She witnessed the birth of the Italian Republic, officially proclaimed on 18 June 1946 after the first election where women could vote, and worked to integrate women into the decision-making process of the country. Ada also became deeply involved in the international women's rights movement, traveling to Paris, Berlin, and China as a representative from Italy. For Ada Gobetti, resistance to tyranny and oppression became a way of life, part of a profound commitment to humanity, justice, and freedom.
