Immigrants from Mexico are attending institutions of higher education, and especially community colleges, in increasing numbers. Many take reading and study skills class in order to prepare for regular academic coursework at their institutions. There is a dearth of research which investigates these students' perceptions of this crucial time in their academic lives. This study investigated student perceptions of this course as well as their backgrounds, struggles and academic and professional aspirations.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study investigated student perceptions of this course as well as their backgrounds, struggles and academic and professional aspirations.
520 $a Qualitative methodology used included in-depth, qualitative individual interviews of eight participants, focus group interviews, interviews of the instructors who taught these students, field notes and classroom observations. This data was condensed by the development of themes and further sub-divided into categories within each theme.
520 $a Findings included the great diversity of students from this sample in age, socioeconomic backgrounds, educational experiences, English language proficiencies and aspirations in the community college, universities and their careers. Within the diversity, all felt the need to take an Academic Reading and Study Skills course in order to prepare for future classes. While some desired further English language practice, all participants took this course for traditional reasons, such as concentration and stress reduction, and reading for the main idea in textbooks. The instructor, whether bilingual or not, played an important role in students' perceptions of the course and a successful outcome.
520 $a Results from this study include student suggestions for improvement and factors instructors, students and the community colleges themselves should consider to help Mexican immigrant students succeed in community colleges and beyond.
