A substantial heritage of classical psychodynamic literature has emphasized the conscious and unconscious memories of early experiences with the primary caretaker serve as a template for relationships throughout life. Recently, Silverman and his colleagues have developed an experimental method which they believe allows the first systematic laboratory investigation of the suggestion of these fantasies, the subliminal psychodynamic activation method (SPAM). A significant body of subliminal activation literature indicates that men consistently respond favorably to a subliminally presented message presumed to activate fantasies of merger with the positive symbiotic mother of early childhood. However, studies using female subjects and/or examiners have been relatively few, results mixed, and interpretation of results presented in sexually biased terms. This study used the subliminal activation method to study the effects of the message MAMA AND I ARE ONE in 30 young adult women. Subjects served as their own controls, and were exposed to a control and experimental condition in randomized, counterbalanced order. Differences in pre- and post-test gain scores on measures of state anxiety, level of object relations in a spontaneously generated story, and affect in the same story were compared between control and experimental conditions by means of a Student t test for paired samples. Results showed a significant increase in positive affect in short stories created after receiving the oneness stimulus compared with the control. Mixed results were obtained on measures of anxiety and object relations.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Post-hoc discriminant analysis of selected factors relating to self concept and maternal relationship showed that combinations of these variables predicted whether a subject belonged to an improved group, adversely affected group, or mixed results group with 80% overall accuracy. Results confirm previous SPAM studies suggesting that women do not respond in the consistent unidirectional positive manner shown by men. Findings are conceptualized as preliminary data confirming current theories in the psychology of women that view the early mother-daughter relationship as more complex and problematic in some ways than that of mother and son. Implications for future research and psychotherapy are considered.
