Thesis (M.S.)--Texas A&M University - Kingsville, 2003.
Regression analysis (N = 695) determined the effect of various measures of social, human, and financial capital on GPA. Annual family income was the measure of financial capital. Social capital measures included peer support, help with homework, encouragement to attend college, study guides from professors, sibling college education, parental education, and parent-child communication. Study time per week and missed class were measures of human capital (motivation). The various aspects of social capital and financial capital were not supported in this study. Results indicated that students showed higher GPAs when they missed fewer classes and studied more hours per week. This finding indicates that human capital as measured by students' motivation is an important factor in the prevention of student attrition. Therefore, educators and researchers should explore factors that develop motivation in students in order to reduce attrition.Subjects--Topical Terms:
