This study explored the lives of restaurant employees and their uses of alcohol. Eighteen restaurant employees participated in qualitative interviews about their demographics; their personal, family, and cultural backgrounds; their alcohol use; and restaurant employment. The results of this study found that one-third of the participants stated they drink every day and/or after every shift. Over one-half of the participants reported they drink over two drinks in a sitting; however, only 2 of the participants thought of themselves as heavy drinkers. Some of the stressors they described regarding their restaurant employment were: difficult working hours, unpredictable income, and complaining customers. Recommendations derived from the study include: employee counseling programs, accessibility to alcohol treatment programs without harsh consequences to their job status, and support groups.Subjects--Topical Terms:
