The struggle to understand and account for values in the clinical enterprise has already begun in psychotherapy and needs to begin in psychological assessment. The ignoring or avoidance of values does nothing to neutralize the influence they have in the clinical work we do, whether in therapy or in assessment. In both the content and methods, all instruments have inherent values.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This paper explicates the values inherent in the content and methods of three popular psychotherapy outcome measures, the Youth Outcome Questionnaire (Y-OQ; Wells, Burlingame, & Lambert, 1999), Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach, 1999), and the SCL-90-R (Derogatis & Savitz, 1999). The analysis of values is separated in two sections: content values and method values. The content of the instruments includes the values inherent in the items themselves. The methods include the type of administration, scoring, and evaluation employed by the creators of the instruments. The content values analyzed in this study include hedonism, agreeableness, materialism, calmness, and atheism. Method values include ease of administration, client honesty and motivation, quantification, atomism, empiricism, reliability, and logical consistency. Contrasting values are provided for each value to help clarify the definition and boundaries of each value.

The consequences of values conflict for two institutions, the Alldredge Academy of West Virginia and Brigham Young University of Provo, Utah are explored. In each case, there are illustrations provided of how specific values inherent in the three psychotherapy outcome instruments conflict with the values of the institution. Examples are given to illustrate how values conflict can have important practical and detrimental consequences.

The avoidance of values, biases, and assumptions is most likely the worst solution (or lack of) to the issue of values. Not only are all psychotherapy outcome instruments value-laden, these values have practical implications for the work of assessment. Avoiding values (or even being unaware of them) can lead to the serious possibilities of misleading or incorrect data and false decisions made on such data.
