Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Mississippi, 2003.
Human gross anatomy, including human cadaver dissection, is one of the first required courses for students entering medical, dental, occupational therapy, or physical therapy professional educational programs. Appropriate preparation of students prior to entering the dissection laboratory is needed for addressing the psychological impact and technical aspects of human cadaver dissection. The purpose of this study was to examine the strength of relationship between previous preparation experiences and students' physical and emotional responses to their first human cadaver dissection experience in a gross anatomy course. A secondary purpose was to examine the strength of relationship between students' pre-encounter apprehension level and physical and emotional status during the dissection experience and to provide descriptive data on students' perceived need and desire for a preparation session. Fourteen null hypotheses were investigated to determine the effect of demographic and academic factors, previous dissection experience, previous exposure to a dead person, pre-dissection apprehension level, and perceived preparation status on the degree of students' emotional and physical responses to the dissection experience.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Two hundred four entering students of medicine, dentistry, occupational therapy, and physical therapy enrolled in a gross anatomy course in the same academic year at the University of Mississippi Medical Center participated in the study. A series of three questionnaires was used for data collection at three points, pre-dissection, 24 hours post-dissection, and 8 weeks post-dissection, to determine the physical and emotional responses of students to their first human cadaver dissection experience in a gross anatomy course. A comprehensive analysis of data included regression analysis, analysis of variance, the paired samples t-test, the McNemar test, point-biserial correlation, and descriptive statistics based on reported frequencies.

Differences among the four student groups were noted in degree of emotional and physical responses and in preference for preparation methods other than pre-exposure to a human cadaver. Group differences observed further suggest that the influence of program expectations and learning environment may affect students differently and may influence the effectiveness of gross anatomy instruction. Further study is needed to examine the effectiveness of various preparation methods and aspects of the learning environment that may enhance the achievement of intended educational goals.
