Psychology as a profession has been steadily recognizing the importance of socio-cultural context. As a result, numerous training programs have arisen in an attempt to reduce bias and prejudice. Many of these training programs have been evaluated as to their overall effectiveness in changing discriminatory attitudes. However, measures that quantify this type of attitudinal shift are scarce, and often geared toward assessing graduate student populations only. This study outlines the creation and initial validation of a new instrument that can be used to assess people's awareness of multicultural concepts such as privilege and oppression.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Psychology as a profession has been steadily recognizing the importance of socio-cultural context. As a result, numerous training programs have arisen in an attempt to reduce bias and prejudice. Many of these training programs have been evaluated as to their overall effectiveness in changing discriminatory attitudes. However, measures that quantify this type of attitudinal shift are scarce, and often geared toward assessing graduate student populations only. This study outlines the creation and initial validation of a new instrument that can be used to assess people's awareness of multicultural concepts such as privilege and oppression.

The creation of the "Awareness of Privilege and Oppression Scale (APOS)" involved several steps. First, the APOS was given to three multicultural experts who critiqued the scale's appropriateness, feasibility, and face validity. As a result of the expert reviews, the APOS was modified and shortened. The 50-item version was then administered to two disparate groups: (a) 133 psychology professionals who had attended a multicultural conference, and (b) 257 undergraduate students at a large southeastern university. The professional sample completed the APOS, as well as the demographic questionnaire. The student sample completed the APOS, the Attitudes Toward Women Scale, the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, and the demographic questionnaire.

Results exhibited support for the APOS as a multicultural measure. The APOS was able to effectively discriminate between the two "known groups" in the sample: t(383) = 27.51, p < .000. The APOS was moderately correlated with the Attitudes Toward Women Scale ( r = .32, p < .000), but was not correlated with the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (r = -.06, p = .34). These results offered evidence for the APOS's discriminant and convergent validity. Finally, factor analyses indicated the APOS did contain the four subscale structure which had been posited theoretically, and the APOS's overall scale reliability was solid (alpha = .83). In sum, the initial validation of the APOS testifies to its suitability as a measure for assessing people's awareness about gender, race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status oppression within American society. The scale's implication for the field of multiculturalism is described, and plans for future research are outlined.
