Many theological scholars have contributed to the process of interpreting the Psalms. However, most of them have done so based upon pre-determined genre classified by taxonomical categories, the historical socio-religious setting, and assumed theological messages. While these factors may help to ascertain the background knowledge about biblical poetry; most of these approaches do not help a person who is producing a cross-cultural translation, which requires very different techniques and processes.Subjects--Topical Terms:

For this study I developed an integrated discourse analysis method which can be used to analyze the psalm text and synthesize the analytical results for a cross-cultural translation context. I do this through the use of recent linguistic theories. This method is applied to analyze the central message of Psalm 73 as a case study which illustrates a discourse analysis of poetry. The same methodological tool can be used to analyze any psalm for any cross-cultural translation context.

The methodology is a three-dimensional approach accounting for linguistic and literary, pragmatic, and thematic actions. Linguistic and literary action focuses on analyzing an author's intentional stylistic format based upon poetry devices at both the macro- and micro-level. Pragmatic action shows the poetic genre of the psalm text, while the thematic action shows how the central message is revealed through the dynamic interaction of participants and themes.

This study contributes to an exegesis of poetry by presenting a well balanced integrated approach to define the central message of poetry texts. It can contribute to defining the textual problems of Hebrew poetry texts within the whole context. It can also contribute to providing a guideline for cross-cultural translators who are struggling with how to apply Hebrew poetic devices to a different context, where poetry devices are often lacking, as was the case among the Mekeo of Papua New Guinea (PNG).

In order to produce a well-balanced translation of poetry, cross-cultural translators need to maintain the important communicational message of the original poetry. This communicational message can be reproduced by utilizing the overall structural framework, pragmatic factors, and thematic interactions of the receptor context along with the well arranged typographic presentation of the translated text showing diverse poetry discourse functions.
