Six hundred forty-eight college students from the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Pakistan, Ecuador, and Taiwan participated in a study investigating perceptions of sexual harassment in an academic setting. Participants indicated their reactions to a sexual harassment scenario and completed two scales: the Tolerance for Sexual Harassment Inventory (TSHI, Lott, Reilly, & Howard, 1982) and the Sexist Attitudes Towards Women Scale (SATWS, Benson & Vincent, 1980). The current study attempted to determine if the two scales could predict scenario responses for the U.S. and cross-cultural samples.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The hypothesis that the TSHI in isolation would predict scenario responses better than the SATWS in isolation received modest support, especially in more individualistic countries. The second hypothesis that the two scales together would predict scenario responses better than either scale in isolation was not confirmed. The third hypothesis, that each scale would have the same factor structure across countries but that the strength of the loadings would vary as a function of the country's degree of individualism and collectivism, was not confirmed; the factor structure of each scale was very different for each country. The final hypothesis that a short form of the SATWS would be as reliable as the full 40-item version was supported.

Interpretations of the results were presented. In addition, the strengths and weakness of the present study were described, as well as implications for future research. The significance of the study is that it demonstrates the difficulties that may arise while attempting to use standardized scales that were developed in the United States in other countries.
