The Internalizing Symptoms Scale for Adolescents (ISSA) is a new self-report that measures internalizing symptoms. Results of exploratory factor analysis have indicated that the ISSA is comprised of two factors, namely negative affect (NA) and positive affect (PA) scales, that combine for a Total score. Therefore, the first purpose of this study was to confirm that factor structure utilizing confirmatory factor analysis. Results indicate that although the underlying factor structure of the ISSA may not be well defined at this point in the development process, an NA/PA factor structure does exist.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The second purpose of this study was to examine the concurrent validity of the ISSA vis-a-vis the Self-Report of Personality for Adolescents (SRP-A) of the Behavior Assessment System for Children. The SRP-A is an established rating scale that measures internalizing and externalizing symptoms using the following composites: Personal Adjustment (PAC), Clinical Maladjustment (CMC), School Maladjustment (SMC), and an Emotional Symptoms Index (ESI). Results indicate that ISSA scores correlate positively with CMC, SMC, and ESI scores, and negatively with PAC scores.

To examine whether ISSA authors should consider creating separate norms based on demographic variables, the third purpose of this study was to investigate whether gender, socioeconomic status (SES), or ethnicity impacted ISSA scores. Using analysis of variance procedures, ISSA scores were compared for (a) males and females; (b) low- and middle-SES participants; and (c) Hispanic, Anglo, and Other participants. Results indicate significant gender and ethnic effects for NA and Total scores but not for PA scores. No significant SES effects were detected.
