A state-action model is proposed of early adult transitions in contemporary China and tested with life history data from Shanghai (1988, N = 1320) through multiple classification and event history analyses. The model is informed by life course and state-society theories, and by the debate on the state and modernization in China. In relation to modernization forces, the study examines both the intended and unintended effects of state actions, such as migration restrictions, rustication, and later marriage.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Major findings include: (1) urban marriages were postponed during periods of intense state intervention (e.g. 1962 through 1979) and the trend of increasing marriage postponement either stopped (for women) or reversed (for men) during periods of laxed state control (e.g. 1980-88), net of the effects of education, rural background, rustication, and employment; (2) rustication had an unintended effect in delaying marriage--the greater the duration, the greater the risk of delay for women but not for men; (3) the effects of education disappeared when marital cohort was considered; (4) parenthood followed marriage across gender, education, and cohort, indicating corresponding dynamics; (5) while men followed a uniform sequence from work to marriage and parenthood, women of pre-1932 cohorts started their wage-earning work often after marriage and having children but women of the post-1940 cohorts started work much like their male peers; and (6) the 1956-63 cohort started their work later but at a faster pace than the 1940-47 and 1948-55 cohorts.
