520 $a This qualitative case study examines the VIA programs in Taiwan and China, focusing on three questions. How does VIA compare to two similar groups, the Yale-China Association and the Oberlin Shansi Memorial Association (OSMA)? How do the Asian host institutions view the program--what benefits and costs do they realize in accepting the volunteers? How do these two groups of VIA participants compare in their pre-departure profiles, experience while in Asia, and activities upon return?
520 $a The Yale-China Association and OSMA have historic ties to China, and reactivated those links in late 1980, when VIA also dispatched its first PRC volunteers. The two other organizations have much greater financial resources than VIA. Yale-China and OSMA place fewer teachers, with more competition for those positions. VIA provides a more elaborate pre-departure training program for its participants.
520 $a Interviews at 13 host institutions revealed that differences of opinion between the two locations concerning VIA volunteers arise largely from their dissimilar teaching situations and political and physical environments. Similarities appear because VIA participants emerge from a relatively homogeneous constituency of college students. English classes at YMCAs in Taiwan are voluntary and serve to generate funds for the Y. Teaching at universities and colleges in the PRC is more academic, and student performance can influence opportunities for overseas study.
520 $a A mail survey was completed by 111 former volunteers, 56% of the target population. Participants going to Taiwan were younger and had less overseas experience than their China counterparts, but were more satisfied with their own teaching effectiveness. Both groups cited loneliness as the most difficult thing about their Asian experience. Returned China volunteers were more likely to pursue Asia-related work or study, but almost all respondents indicated a sustained interest in Asian current events and culture. Participants reported personal and intellectual growth, and an expanded appreciation of international relationships at the individual and national levels as enduring effects of their VIA experience.
