Research has indicated that individuals with schizophrenia who are experiencing high levels of stress are at an increased risk for relapse (Dawson, Nuechterlein, Schell, Gitlin, & Ventura, 1994). Participants were nine male outpatients with chronic schizophrenia, ages 23 to 54, from a university affiliated independent living skills program in an urban area of the Central Valley of California. A multiple-probe-design across participants with three cohorts was used. Behavioral Relaxation Training (Poppen, 1988) was used to teach relaxation and participants were rated by an objective index of relaxed postures using the Behavioral Relaxation Scale (Poppen, 1988). Physiological indicators of arousal, including electromyograph muscle tension (EMG) and electrodermal response (EDR), were measured using the J & J I 330 Model computer-assisted psychophysiological equipment. Twenty-four symptoms were rated by an outside observer using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) (Lukoff, Liberman, Nuechterlein, & Ventura, 1986). The S-Anxiety scale from the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (S-Anxiety scale) (Spielberger, 1983) was used to measure subjective feelings of anxiety. There was no mortality; however, four participants required modified training. Results indicated that BRT reduced neither EMG nor EDR. On several occasions, EMG levels did not appear to be stress related; however, EDR levels were associated with stressful events. All participants anxiety scores decreased from baseline to follow-up. For the BPRS, eight participants' scores decreased and one remained relatively stable. Subjective evaluations indicated that five participants were rated as more calm from baseline to follow-up, two were less calm, and two showed no change. All but one participant felt that relaxation helped him. It appears that Behavioral Relaxation Training should be modified qualitatively and quantitatively to be effective for persons with schizophrenia. Suggestions for modification are discussed.
