Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1993.
This dissertation is an introduction, translation and commentary of Galen's On the Constitution of the Art of Medicine. The introduction provides a general treatment of Galen's philosophical and medical antecedents, his system of medicine and methodology. The manuscript tradition and text of the treatise are also discussed, and a synopsis of the argument is given. The translation of this treatise is the first in English and is based on the new edition of Stefania Fortuna (forthcoming in Corpus Medicorum Graecorum). The commentary deals with problems of interpretation, medical and philosophical issues, and textual variants where they impinge on the interpretation of the text. The guiding principle of the commentary is to explicate Galen's often difficult Greek and flesh out his conceptual world, to situate his ideas in the history of Western medicine and philosophy, and to make Galen's system of medicine more accessible to the general reader. Until recently, very little research has been devoted to On the Constitution of the Art of Medicine, and this dissertation is, in part, an attempt to fill this lacuna in work on Galen. A glossary and index of medical and philosophical terms is given, and bibliography.Subjects--Topical Terms:
