Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2004.
This study explored academic achievement (measured by university GPA) and academic persistence toward the bachelor degree among students that successfully transfer to a highly selective institution. A cohort of Illinois public community college transfers from fall, 1998, spring 1999, fall 1999 and spring 2000 were examined. The total sample included N = 1538 from 45 public Illinois community colleges. The study hypothesized that social demographics, community college experiences, and university major did not affect (no significant differences) or have any association to academic achievement and persistence among Illinois community college transfers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). The results revealed that differences in social demographics such as race and gender were statistically significant in terms of academic achievement, while only age was a factor in persistence toward the baccalaureate degree. Additionally, regression analysis revealed that the single most powerful predictive factor in determining a students' university GPA (academic achievement) was community college GPA. In addition, regression analysis revealed that the chances of obtaining a bachelors degree included several other factors among social demographic and community colleges experiences (including community college GPA).Subjects--Topical Terms:
