Purpose, scope, and method of study. Character education has been a priority in both public and private schools in the United States for centuries. While research has studied the effectiveness of character education in the public school, research is lacking on character education in the private, religious school setting. Although the majority of the experts in the field of character education advocate using the school's concurrent curricula (e.g., official, operational, extra, and hidden) to teach character, there is little research on how a school's concurrent curricula teaches character. This study describes how the curriculum at a private, religious school teaches character to its students. This single case study analyzes a Jewish day school's curriculum by examining school documents and records, observing classroom instruction and school culture, and interviewing school administrators and teachers.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Findings and conclusions. From the data gathered through school documents, direct observations, and interviews, several themes emerged. These themes directly addressed the research literature's need to know how a school that effectively teaches character goes about its daily business. The curriculum at a Jewish day school teaches character concurrently by clearly meeting eleven criteria set by the Character Education Partnership as necessary for effective character education. This study concludes, however, that the reason the Jewish day school is able to teach character comprehensively is due to its religious foundation---from which the entire curriculum evolves. While the case study research is not necessarily generalizable to mass populations, the findings of this study can be transferred to similar settings.
