For years, historic and native landscapes have been destroyed through insensitive urban development practices. As a result, original native wildlife has diminished significantly or become extinct. In North Texas these dramatic changes in the environment have negatively impacted waterfowl, in particular the wood duck.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Contemporary ecological concerns have begun to change the way landscape architects analyze, design and impact landscapes. New efforts in landscape architecture encourage professionals to be mindful of how design affects the wildlife and how human activity and environmental disruption, even when designed, affect wildlife. Understanding the habitat needs of a species and how the human condition affects a species allow landscape architects to analyze and design using effective criteria that can save or enhance environmental areas for wood ducks within urban environments. Preserving riparian corridors, habitat restoration, and wetland conservation are beneficial factors that can increase natural wood duck habitat in urban environments, reversing certain negative effects human kind has already placed upon the natural environment and the waterfowl existing within North Central Texas. Understanding the biological needs, specific habitat needs and the effects of human activity on wood ducks is most important to their survival in urban environments. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
