Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 2002.
This work investigates the constitutive relationship of orthotropic materials under bi-axial large deformations. Examples of orthotropic materials, that can also sustain large deformation, include flexible composites, soft tissues, and textile fabrics, etc. Literature search reveals that the constitutive relationship for this type of materials has not been well understood. Three approaches have been used in this research. For each approach, constitutive equations are developed and theoretical predictions are compared with available experimental data in literature First, the flexible composite lamina theory is introduced and extended to study the laminated flexible composites. Second, the fabric flexible composite theory has been applied to predict the biaxial behavior of biological soft tissues including cardiac muscles and lung parenchyma after obtaining the input properties from their uniaxial experimental data.

Third, a sinusoidal fabric model is developed for plain-woven fabrics consist of monofilaments. Failure analyses are also conducted. For the fabrics with yarns, yarn flattening, flattening energy and transverse shear effect are considered after modification. In each case, good correlation between theoretical predictions and experiment results has been found.
