Dyebath monitoring technology has been used to monitor dye concentrations in a dyebath in real time and control the rate of exhaustion and chemical addition to ensure that the dyeing process yields the desired product. In this work, an existing flow injection analysis dyebath monitoring system was used to investigate the dyeing behavior of cotton treated with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC).

Specifically, exhaustion profiles, equilibrium dyeing parameters and kinetic rate constants were determined for the cationized cotton and for reference fabrics using direct and acid dyes. In addition, other properties of the dyed fabrics such as fastness to laundering, light and crocking were also investigated. Cross-sections of the dyed fibers were prepared to prove that the cationic treatment and dye are evenly distributed throughout the dyed substrate.

Migration properties of acid dyes on cationized cotton were investigated to determine if acid dyes on cationic cotton could level once they have been applied to the fabric. Blocking effects for acid dye pairs in single application were investigated to determine if the rate of dye uptake was decreased when a single dye was applied after most of the dyesites on the cationic cotton were filled. Blocking was also investigated when the two dyes were applied in a mixture.
