Data were collected via a six-section questionnaire, administered in classes, which examined: (1) the perceived role of leisure in the lives of students; (2) leisure activity patterns; (3) flow experience during leisure/study; (4) leisure constraints; (5) leisure education; and (6) socio-demographic information. Proportionate sampling was performed to select a total of 34 class-units from normal university/teachers college throughout Taiwan. An overall response rate of 88% (N = 879) was obtained.

The major findings included: (1) students recognized the role of leisure in their lives as "important"; "leisure" was most often conceptualized as "reducing stress/relaxation"; (2) students were the most likely to participate in activity patterns of Social Recreation, followed by Mass Media/Education, Music/Social, Sports, Outdoor Recreation, Arts/Hobby Activity, Games, Youth Culture and Meditation/Religion; (3) students were more likely to experience flow during leisure than during study; (4) students were more likely to be constrained by structural factors than by intrapersonal or interpersonal ones, when they participated in leisure activities; (5) slightly less than half the students agreed that their schools had provided the education for leisure, and those who did express little satisfaction with such offerings; regarding the extent of leisure education, learning about "Decision-making" was the most requested, followed by "Leisure Awareness," "Counseling," and "Skills/Resources"; (6) gender was significantly related to the perception of the role of leisure, leisure activity patterns, flow experience during leisure, leisure constraints, and the extent of leisure education.
