Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating condition that can seriously affect the quality of life of those afflicted. The knee joint is one of the most commonly affected sites in the human body, as it must perform wide ranges of motion while being subjected to large loads during many everyday activities. Previously, it was believed that OA was an inevitable consequence of the aging process as these loads would eventually break down the articular cartilage and cause the associated symptoms. Recently, it has been suggested that this process might not be quite so simple.

The purpose of this study was to examine the progression of OA and the changes in the gait patterns of elderly individuals over many years. This was accomplished by recalling several elderly individuals who had previously participated in a gait analysis study in our laboratory. These people were all self described healthy, normal, elderly individuals with no known knee problems at the time of their first visit. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
