This dissertation consists of three sections regarding dye-sensitized solar cells based upon ruthenium and osmium polypyridyl chromophores bound to nanocrystalline metal oxide surfaces. The first half of Chapter 1 emphasizes relevant background of semiconductors and metals, and Ru(bpy)3(PF 6)2 photophysics. The latter half notes important research leading up to the current perception of the dye-sensitized solar cell.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The second section regards photophysical studies of various excited state reaction processes, dynamics, and yields. Within Chapter 2, new sensitizers with highly oxidizing excited states were synthesized, and attached to nanocrystalline TiO2 and ZrO2 for excited-state reductive quenching studies. Thin film actinometers (i.e. chemical photon counters) were produced for transient measurements with a geometry that mimicked the dye-sensitized environment (Chapter 3). Their reliability was explored spectroscopically as a function of irradiance and surface coverage. In Chapter 4, cage escape yields and back reaction dynamics between a reduced sensitizer and oxidized donor were quantified in solution and at a ZrO2 surface. Excited state energy transfer and annihilation dynamics across metal oxide surfaces were studied in Chapter 5.

The final part is comprised within Chapters 6 and 7, and generally encompasses photoelectrochemical studies. They emphasize the utility, development, and implementation of other redox mediators besides I3- /I-, such as (SeCN)2/SeCN- , and (SCN)2/SCN-. The sensitizers developed within Chapter 2 were contrasted to N3, using these alternative redox mediators, and mesoporous SnO2 electrodes.
