The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of state-adopted textbooks in high school choral music education in South Carolina. Two textbooks, Sing! and Something New To Sing About, were adopted by the South Carolina Department of Education in 1990. The manner in which, as well as the extent to which these textbooks were used by high school choral teachers in South Carolina, was examined. The high school choral teachers of South Carolina were questioned about their use of the books, their professional preparation, the size of the school at which they taught, the length of time having taught, and the length of time having used the state-adopted textbook. Additional areas of contextual content information requested were the types of instructional activities that were conducted by the teachers, their opinions of the helpfulness of the texts and teacher's manual/guides, and descriptions of their use of the textbooks.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The questionnaires also requested information concerning the teachers' use of each chapter or unit of the textbooks, as well as their use of the musical selections contained in the textbooks. The results indicated that South Carolina choral music teachers primarily used the state-adopted textbooks as a supplementary source of instruction in lecture and lecture demonstration forms of pedagogy.
