Major findings included: (1) approximately 70% of the participating school districts had no written policy dealing with religion; (2) rural school districts and those with small student enrollments were less likely to have written policies dealing with religion; (3) approximately 84% of participating school districts reported no complaints involving religion for a two-year period prior to the Spring of 1997; (4) most written policies stated that religious topics should be dealt with in an objective and neutral manner; and (5) eleventh grade U.S. history textbooks included more extensive coverage of Christian religious groups and Pre-Civil War religious topics than for any other religious groups or time periods.
