Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of San Francisco, 2004.
This dissertation examines the topic of oppression, liberation, and language, in gay bilinguals. It examines the commonality of oppression of gay individuals, regardless of language and culture. The psychodynamic function of language, in both words and language systems is explored, and related to Freire's levels of consciousness. Second language acquisition is explored from a social and psycholinguistic perspective. The unique power of the first language in forming our mind, our self, and our world, which is often oppressive in gay individuals, is compared to a second language learned later in life, which can help facilitate a critical perspective and critical consciousness development.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Findings and conclusions included four major generative themes: The need for understanding the personal histories of gay individuals, internalized homophobia, homophobic culture in the family and educational environments, and the theme of language, oppression, and liberation. Participatory research is employed which allows the participants to develop a critical perspective by confronting their own oppression, liberation, and transformation. The participatory research methodology provides a forum for destroying the ideological base of current structures giving a voice to those who live in what Freire calls a "culture of silence". The theoretical frameworks employed include Vygotskian sociocultural theory, the bilingual dual coding model, the psychodynamic function of language, and Freire's theory of oppression, liberation, and transformation.
