Medieval pilgrims who journeyed to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury between 1171 and 1538 usually purchased metal souvenirs, which they wore to signify their status as pilgrims of Saint Thomas. These metal souvenirs, called "signs" in medieval documents, take two forms: ampullae, which contained a small amount of water tinged with the blood of the martyred saint, which pilgrims wore around their necks; and badges, which they wore pinned to their clothing. This study of Canterbury pilgrims' signs adds to our understanding of medieval pilgrimage both empirically and conceptually.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study analyses the collection of Canterbury pilgrims' signs discovered in archaeological excavations in the city of London and housed in the Museum of London. These pilgrims' signs are contextualized using the Miracula Sancti Thomae Cantuariensis, the miracles collected at Canterbury Cathedral during the first decade of the cult, which provides the best evidence for the contemporary understanding of these objects. Other documents from the period and information about the use of badges by groups other than pilgrims are used to expand the picture of the society in which pilgrims' signs were worn. Individual examples of unusual pilgrims' signs and of situations in which pilgrims' signs were used are analyzed in support of the conclusions derived from studying the signs collectively.

This thesis proposes that to wear a pilgrim's sign meant more than the personal commemoration of a pilgrimage. Rather, the sign was a public statement of its wearer's ongoing affiliation with the saint, complete with mutual obligations of devotion and protection, and that this relationship was similar to other types of individual and corporate allegiances that were also signified by wearable insignia.
