The research participants for this nationwide survey consisted of 142 undergraduate librarians. Undergraduate librarians were defined as those librarians who worked in libraries which were intended for undergraduate students, located in institutions supporting advanced graduate work, were housed either in a central library building or in a separate building, and consisted of a collection designed to support the undergraduate curriculum and personnel and services which promoted the integration of the library into the undergraduate teaching program of the university. In response to a pretested questionnaire, 111 usable returns were received to give a response rate of 78.2 percent. The data were analyzed using frequency distributions.

These librarians reported to an associates or assistant director or university librarian or to a director. The titles of the non-administrators reflected their professional assignments.

$1
0,000 to over
$3
0,000. Nearly 33 percent earned between
$1
3,000 and
$1
7,999. Approximately 60 percent felt their salaries were inadequate for their experience and education.

Although 32.7 percent of the undergraduate librarians did not desire to remain indefinitely in undergraduate librarianship and 52.9 percent desired to leave, 79.2 percent agreed that their present positions were satisfactory, 50.9 percent agreed that their careers were fulfilling their expectations more than expected, and 83.5 percent were satisfied with their present jobs when they compared them to similar positions in other libraries.

Given a list of eleven suggested roles as necessary for success as an undergraduate librarian, the respondents could not provide a clear ranking. When given thirty-seven functions and roles to evaluate in the actual and in the ideal, the undergraduate librarians actually performed twenty-nine functions and roles a majority of the time, but would do thirty-six of them at least 70 percent of the time in the ideal.
