Concern over youth disengagement from schooling, particularly disengagement by youth facing dual challenges of English Language learning and socio-economic hardship, has led to support from national, state, and local entities for after-school programs. UC Links was created in 1996 by the University of California Office of the President to foster learning and school success among at-risk children. UC Links places university undergraduates in contact with elementary school students in the environment of an after-school computer club and embeds academic and social support within the playing of computer and board games and related literacy activities. Undergraduate-club member interactions are intended to improve club members' academic and social skills while raising their educational aspirations so they will think of themselves as future university students.

This study examined the impact of university undergraduates on the club members' perception of a student at a university. The treatment group studied were 4th and 5th grade students who attended Hoover Elementary in Santa Ana during the school day and participated after-school in the UC Links Cosmic Dimension Computer Club during a nine month period from September 1999 to June 2000. All students in grades 4 and 5 at Hoover Elementary were invited to draw a picture of a student at a university and write a description of their drawing. From a population of 206, 77 drawings and descriptions by club members were compared with 129 drawings and descriptions from non-club participants.

Analysis of the drawings revealed that Hoover children have considerable variation in their representations of a university student and that information about post-secondary education is coming from teachers, undergraduates, and relatives. The children's written descriptions proved to be a window into their thinking about post-secondary education. Major thematic messages were positive and represented the university as a place where students learn, study, graduate, pursue careers, and receive support from others. The university is described as a pleasant place where the children envision themselves, their friends, and their family. Results from this study suggest that 4th and 5th grades would be fertile targets for university outreach efforts to begin building the pipeline to post-secondary education.
