The purpose of this study was to discover the determinants of student satisfaction with Yobiko, private institutions in Japan which prepare students for the university entrance examinations. I selected a large yobiko in Tokyo, Kensugakkan, that combined the characteristics of two extreme types of yobiko, the small regional yobiko and the large national chain yobiko. 500 questionnaires were distributed to randomly selected students at Kensugakkan. 411 questionnaires were returned completed. I also conducted interviews with a handful of yobiko students (n = 12) to add depth to the quantitative findings. The main analysis of the dissertation is based on correlation analysis, chi-square and analysis of variance procedures.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The individual level data allowed me to examine determinants of student satisfaction with yobiko. I measured satisfaction in a range of ways, looking at satisfaction with yobiko teachers, textbooks, counseling and instruction. Using factor analysis, I was able to construct an index of satisfaction with yobiko. I examined statistical relationships between these various measures of satisfaction with yobiko and a number of independent variables, such as gender, aspirations, socio-economic background and type of high school graduated.

I found that, in general, the yobiko experience has a major impact on students' aspirations for university advancement and perceptions of reasons for success and failure. These dimensions impact directly on satisfaction with yobiko. I found that SES has a positive impact on satisfaction with yobiko. Also, students with high SES are more likely to take the National Unified Entrance Examination than students with lower SES.

In terms of instruction, I found that there is a strong relationship between the perceptions of the mathematics and English teaching at the yobiko and student satisfaction. There was no relationship between perceptions of Japanese language teaching and satisfaction. Gender also has no relationship to satisfaction.

In general, students appear to be satisfied with the job that the yobiko is doing. The students believe that the yobiko is providing them with a second chance (haishafukatsusen) to enter a university of choice. The students believe that the teachers, textbooks and counseling at yobiko are effective. These findings support the notion that yobiko are providing an important function in the Japanese educational system and suggests that public educational institutions in Japan are failing in some ways to meet the needs and demands of students.
