English language teaching plays an important role in Chinese education. The teaching of English in China can be traced as far back as the year of 1807 when a British missionary first brought English teaching to China. In the study proposed here, an attempt will be made to answer the question "What are the historical origins of English language teaching in China and what are the identifiable periods of change in the development of English language teaching in China?"Subjects--Topical Terms:

The purpose of this study is to provide the international community and people in the People's Republic of China with detailed information about English language teaching in China and the historical factors that affected the teaching of English. I shall also determine whether or not there are discernible patterns in the teaching of English that occurred during different historical periods. Based on these historical patterns, I shall suggest future directions in English language teaching. Recommendations for improving the teaching of English in China will be provided.
