The purpose of this qualitative meta-analysis was to develop critical criteria for assessing early childhood qualitative research in which data are collected from young children between the ages of three and eight. The integrative literature review consisted of qualitative and early childhood methodologies from which the themes and descriptors emerged to address four research standards: (1) authenticity, (2) trustworthiness, (3) credibility, and, (4) persuasiveness (overall warrant). The themes and descriptors focused on two major areas--fundamental early childhood issues and early childhood data collection methodologies.

The themes and descriptors were meta-analytically examined in a total of forty early childhood qualitative research studies within the fields of child development, psychology, and early childhood education. These studies were reported in three distinct formats: (1) reports and conference papers, (2) journal articles and anthologies, and, (3) books and unpublished dissertations. To be included in this research, studies needed to be qualitative in design; include data collected directly from children through observation, interviews, and/or artifacts; and be conducted with the past twenty years.

These studies revealed that researchers who endeavor to qualitatively capture the "voices" of young children should incorporate those methodological themes and descriptors identified through the integrative literature review within their research studies in order to overcome their adult perspective and bias and to enable the perspective of young children to be revealed. Knowledge and experience with young children along with flexibility of design allow the researcher to be responsive to the data generated through observations, interviews, and artifact collection and can afford the researcher the means to overcome adult bias as well as other obstacles resulting from the language, conceptual, and communicative differences and limitations of children.

The body of studies examined also revealed the invaluable role that young children are capable and able to undertake in research when adults design research projects that enable them to do so. The children's "voices" included in the research studies examined in the course of this inquiry revealed the vulnerable nature of children as well as their fortitude, strength, and abilities to comprehend, conceptualize, and deal with the expectations and demands of the situations in which they live their lives.

Early childhood caregivers, administrators, and policy makers--the consumers of early childhood qualitative research--should critically examine research projects that purport to reveal aspects of the lives of young children. An early childhood qualitative research project must ensure the reader, the consumer, that the voice of the young child has been "discovered" in a trustworthy, credible, manner, and the voice is authentically that of the child.
