The purpose of this study was to critically examine, from a historical perspective, how gender specific identities are depicted in children's literature books that have won the Caldecott Medal (American Library Association, 1999) beginning in the year 1970 until the present time. The Caldecott Medal is awarded each year by the American Library Association to the artist of the most distinguished American children's picture book published during the previous year.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The books were examined from the feminist epistemological stance of how young women come to know their own identities based on gender specific identities depicted in these books. The aim of this study was to examine the following research questions: How have female sex-roles been treated in children's literature from 1970 to the present? What percentage of books from each of the three decades would be classified as stereotypic? Are female stereotypes still predominant?

From a content-analysis approach, within a historical perspective, this research aimed to examine the degree to which traditional female stereotypes still predominate within a sampling of Caldecott award-winning children's books available from the Chicago Public Library and all major libraries throughout the country. The sample included ten books each from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and the Caldecott winners for 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003, totaling thirty-four books.

The text and illustrations of each book were analyzed based on a rubric designed by the researcher and evaluated by a survey completed by a panel of eight educators. Each expert was asked to follow a standard procedure to conduct their analysis so as to minimize outside variables that could have affected the results.

The number of times female characters in the selected books are given traditionally feminine traits (i.e., dependent, emotional, feminine, passive, sensitive) was established, as was the number of times they are given traditionally masculine traits (i.e., adventurous, dominant, independent, masculine, self-confident). From these results, the book was classified as to its degree of "stereotyping". Chapter Two supports the use of these traditionally feminine traits and traditionally masculine traits as valid and reliable characteristics to determine the degree of stereotyping.

This study is not intended to condemn the idea of females showing feminine-type behavior in children's literature but, rather, because of vast changes in society and significant shifts in our understanding of femininity and masculinity, to determine whether or not these popular, highly honored books, used daily by educators in classrooms across the nation, are indicating the full range of activities and behaviors available to women.
